Hydrogenics to Supply Electrolyzer and Fuel Cell for Renewable Hydrogen Research and Demonstration Centre
Hydrogen to be developed as fuel of the future at Baglan Energy Park
Hydrogenics Corporation (Toronto:HYG.TO - News) (NasdaqGM:HYGS - News), a leading designer and manufacturer of hydrogen electrolyzers and fuel cell systems, today announced that it has been selected to provide a hydrogen electrolyzer and fuel cell for the new Renewable Hydrogen Research and Demonstration Centre at the Baglan Energy Park. Air Liquide Advanced Technologies, a division of the Air Liquide Group, the world leader of industrial and medical gases was selected to integrate the whole hydrogen solution. The Centre, which is being developed by the University of Glamorgan is the first of its kind in Wales, and will explore the potential use of hydrogen as one of the key fuels of the future and show how hydrogen can be produced from local sources. The project will bring together academic and industry expertise and research, providing a hub for hydrogen business development throughout Wales. Hydrogenics will provide its HySTAT-10 electrolyzer driven by wind turbines for the production of hydrogen, which will then be used to power a Hydrogenics 1 x HyPM 12 fuel cell power module. The hydrogen will also be used to fuel hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, including a delivery van and a shuttle bus previously integrated with a Hydrogenics fuel cell power module. \"Hydrogen provides an ideal energy solution,\" said Daryl Wilson, President and CEO of Hydrogenics. \"We believe that hydrogen will play a critical role in capturing the power of renewable resources and creating viable clean energy systems that are cost effective, sustainable and environmentally friendly,\" added Mr. Wilson. Hydrogen power is highly scaleable and ideal for storing large amounts of energy for long periods of time. In addition, hydrogen is multi-use and can be used to fuel vehicles and other industrial equipment, or even generate power for community electrical grids, with energy derived from renewable resources.
The Hydrogenics electrolyzer was selected through Air Liquide Advanced Technologies, specializing in cryogenics and gas engineering. Air Liquide was designated to provide a global and tailor-made solution to meet the specific needs of the University of Glamorgan for its new research centre. This specific solution includes hydrogen plant compression, storage and dispensing integration (CSD). \"This is a unique solution for a unique customer. We had the opportunity to prove that hydrogen is a very promising alternative solution that offers tremendous potential for supplying clean silent energy,\" said Catherine Candela, General Manager of Air Liquide Advanced Technologies. \"This solution fulfills Air Liquide\'s commitment to sustainable development,\" added Ms. Candela\".
UPS Systems plc, independent specialists in standby power solutions, designed and will install the fuel cell system for the Baglan Energy Park project. In addition to the Hydrogenics HyPM fuel cell module, the system includes two inverters and a specially designed controller that manages the system and allows it to interact with other renewable energy sources.
\"The Energy Park has now become a premier venue for businesses that are at the forefront of their field,\" said Professor Dennis Hawkes who is leading the project. \"Rather than an isolated one-off demonstration, this project is to provide the basis for a range of hydrogen energy and transport activities. Its intention is to put Wales at the forefront of European efforts to develop hydrogen communities. The new Centre will bring together technology and expertise and will provide a platform for new business development, growth and employment in the region,\" added Professor Hawkes.
