Survey of Experienced IT Practitioners shows how lost encryption keys disrupt business and major security concerns stand in the way of Cloud Computing

The Story

Fat cat cybercriminals are pocketing huge profits through a comparatively low-risk, fast-growing crime peddling bogus security software or so called ‘Scareware’ to unsuspecting internet users. This is according to a new report from Symantec on Rogue Security Software.

 

A 3rd generation of highly organised criminals, are creating ‘Scareware’ – counterfeit anti-virus software, that unsuspecting users are tricked into downloading when they visit unfamiliar websites – enabling kingpin cybercriminals to net profits of more than 850,000 GBP a year (858,130 GBP). The sophistication of the scam means that 93% of Scareware is intentionally downloaded by internet users convinced they are doing the ‘right’ thing.

The Information Systems Security Association (ISSA) has published a ground-breaking white paper that sets out guidelines and best practice in the identity assurance space, helping to encourage a better understanding of the need for organisations to verify the identity of their customers.

The not-for-profit, international professional organisation of information security professionals and practitioners has enlisted the support of the Right Honourable David Blunkett MP, who said, “There is the most enormous amount of discussion and hand-wringing in this area of deep concern; but these recommendations are about real action in joining together government and public service on the one hand, and private companies and individuals on the other.”

Revenues surge 45% over Q3’08, adds 94 new customers, appoints new executive management

Australian security software developer Tier-3 has joined the McAfee Security Innovation Alliance™ (SIA). The alliance allows McAfee customers to enhance their investment in McAfee products by adding a range of interoperable and highly complementary capabilities offered by Tier-3’s HUNTSMAN.
