Cummins Westport Inc., a joint venture of Cummins Inc. of Columbus, Indiana and Westport Innovations Inc. of Vancouver, announced that it has received orders for 45 alternative fuel engines for buses manufactured by Eldorado National of Chino, CA. Of the total, 37 are propane engines for Los Angeles Department of Transportation (LADOT) buses and eight are natural gas engines for Dallas-Fort Worth Airport buses. All the engines are for new 30-foot buses manufactured by ElDorado, one of the largest producers of commercial shuttle buses in North America. ElDorado National is a unit of Thor Industries Inc. (NYSE:THO) of Jackson Center, Ohio.

For LADOT, the Cummins Westport engine is the 5.9-liter B5.9LPG. The new 30-foot low-floor buses will augment 144 ElDorado buses with B5.9LPG engines already in service. The buses are mainly used for quick-trip routes in the downtown area of Los Angeles and surrounding communities. The B5.9LPG is the only certified low-emissions propane engine in its class in North America. The local Cummins distributor involved with the LADOT buses is Cummins Cal Pacific. Delivery is scheduled for later this year.

For Dallas-Fort Worth, the Cummins Westport engine is the 8.3-liter C Gas Plus. The new 30-foot low-floor buses will be used to shuttle travelers between the airport and parking lots. Dallas Fort Worth Airport operates 39 shuttle buses, of which 13 currently use natural gas and the rest use diesel fuel. The new buses will replace older diesels, bringing the natural gas portion of the fleet to 21. These new buses will be the first in the fleet with the C Gas Plus engine. The local Cummins distributor involved in the sale is Cummins Southern Plains. Delivery is scheduled for later this year.

The B5.9LPG and C Gas Plus engines are manufactured at the Cummins engine plant in Rocky Mount, North Carolina. Cummins Inc. is a global power leader in engines, electrical power generation systems and related technologies. Westport Innovations is the leading developer of natural gas fuel systems for diesel engines. Cummins Westport Inc., formed in March 2001, develops and markets low-emissions propane and natural gas vehicle engines manufactured by Cummins.
