10 March 2009 – telent has been selected by Network Rail to replace the existing Driver Only Operator system at stations across the South East. telent will replace cameras, monitors, housings and cabling at 159 platforms across 66 stations served predominantly by Southeastern and some Southern operated trains.
The Driver Only Operator system allows the train driver to check CCTV monitors on the platform to ensure that passengers are clear of the doors and it is safe to move off. The system enables trains to operate safely, without the need for a train dispatcher and improves train times in and out of the station.
With different train formations, platform curvatures and monitors having to be provided at all stopping points along the platform, the requirements for each platform are different. telent uses its own in-house software modelling package to design the CCTV camera and monitor layouts to fit each platform as required.
The project commenced in February 2009 and will continue until completion in June 2010. During this time telent will be responsible for the installation and commissioning of 900 CCTV cameras, 1200 monitors and all associated housing and cabling works across the 159 platforms.
Steve Pears, General Manager Rail at telent, said: “We are delighted to have won this important infrastructure project in addition to our existing framework contract for the South East Network Rail region. The combination of our rail and telecommunications expertise makes telent the ideal choice for this project.”
telent won the project following a five-way tender and has been commissioned to install and commission the camera, monitor, housings and cable system.
