Support for Napatech intelligent network adapters in latest release of Suricata allows quick and efficient development of high performance 1Gbps, 10 Gbps and 40 Gbps Intrusion Detection and Prevention Systems
LAFAYETTE, Ind., CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., ANDOVER, Ma., - The Open Information Security Foundation (OISF) today announced support in the latest release of Suricata for Napatech intelligent network adapters. This will allow network security equipment vendors to quickly and efficiently build high performance 1Gbps, 10 Gbps and 40 Gbps Intrusion Detection and Prevention Systems (IDS/IPS) using off-the-shelf standard servers and Napatech network adapters seamlessly integrated into Suricata based application software.
The support for Napatech network adapters has been contributed by nPulse Technologies, who have demonstrated 10 Gbps IDS/IPS based on Suricata at several shows over the last year. nPulse provided a wrapper library which allows Suricata to automatically recognize the presence of a Napatech adapter, and then to take advantage of its offload and acceleration features, greatly improving IDS/IPS throughput. This performance is now accessible to all OEM vendors who use Napatech intelligent network adapters.
"With the availability of seamless Napatech support in the latest release of Suricata, the components are now in place to provide IDS/IPS vendors with a high performance alternative platform for their development," stated Henrik Brill Jensen, CEO Napatech. "Basing development on off-the-shelf standard servers enables faster time-to-market, lower technical risk and lower total cost of ownership. Napatech intelligent network adapters ensure high IDS/IPS throughput performance, while Suricata ensures efficient, multi-threaded detection making optimal use of high speed multi-core server CPUs."
"Napatech has been a great technology partner and supporter of the Suricata project" says Matt Jonkman, President of the OISF, a non-profit foundation funded by DHS and industry partners like Napatech to build an open-source IDS engine. "Without forward looking and collaborative partners like Napatech Suricata would have never gotten off of the ground. We believe that this partnership of community, open source, government and industry yields open source tools that best serve all involved."
Randy Caldejon, nPulse’s CTO, added; “We have worked closely at an engineering level with both Napatech and OISF for some time. By contributing the integration code as a library, we enable other Suricata users to easily take advantage of the Napatech adapter.”
At the upcoming RSA show at the Moscone Center, San Francisco, Napatech will be providing a demonstration of how Suricata can be used to build a 10 Gbps IDS/IPS appliance. The demonstration will be shown on the Napatech stand 1657 at RSA from February the 27th to the 1st of March.

About Napatech
Napatech is the leading OEM supplier of 40 GbE, 10 GbE and 1 GbE intelligent adapters for real-time network analysis with over 80,000 Ethernet ports deployed. Napatech network adapters provide real-time packet capture and transmission with full line-rate throughput and zero packet loss no matter the packet size. Intelligent features enable off-load of data traffic processing and packet analysis normally performed in the CPU. This results in more processing power for the network monitoring, analysis, management, test, measurement, security or optimization application being supported. Napatech has sales, marketing and R&D offices in Mountain View (CA), Andover (MA), Washington D.C., Tokyo (Japan), Seoul (South Korea) and Copenhagen (Denmark).
